Unit 4Discussion
Identify a disenfranchised racial, ethnic, religious, or cultural group whose population experiences microaggressions in U.S. society. (For example, Asian, African American, Hispanic, Muslim, disabled, LGBT, or women.) Using the Sue (2010) text as a reference, define microaggressions and provide examples of the type of microaggressions your selected population may encounter.
Microaggression is a brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial, gender, sexual-orientation, and religious slights and insults to the target person or groups (Sue, 2010). Perpetrators are usually unaware that they have engaged in an exchange that demeans the recipient of the communication. I was shocked to read that race experts believe that racism has become below the level of conscious awareness (Sue, 2010).
I Chose women to provide examples of microaggressions. Women are more then likely are subject to
1. Sexual Objectification Occurs when women are treated as though they were objects at mens disposal.
2. Myth of Meritocracy Statements which assert that race or gender does not play a role in life successes.
3. Traditional Gender Role Prejudicing and Stereotyping Occurs when expectations of traditional roles or stereotypes are conveyed
Choose a different race or ethnicity and imagine that the family involved in this case was from this racial or ethnic background (instead of Hmong). What kinds of microaggressions do you think this family could have experienced?
I choose racial and gender microgressions were being delivered in the classroom by a well intentioned professor. When called upon the the student spoke in a frustrated manner and the professor wanted him to calm down. Leaving the professor to feel throughout the semester some sort of resentment. Although the professor welcomed the opportunity to say something positive, one of the students point of views didnt align with the professor. The student believed that they were looking at the views from different perspective.
* Describe personal experiences with microaggressions.
My Microaggression experience consist of Sexual ObjectificationSexual objectification is the process by which women are transformed into objects or property at the sexual disposal or benefit of men (Sue, 2010). Anyway, the cumulative effect of all this is that we are socializing generation after generation to view the world, and the women in it, from the point of view of men. As a result, only men are seen as full and complete human beings, not women. Women are objectified – this means we are denied agency, and are seen from the outside, our own consciousness, our thoughts and feelings, utterly overlooked
