This paper requires you to exhibit two important skills as you develop your critical thinking ability: 1) Cogent, well-written analysis of poetry, and 2) the ability to unify and draw thematic connections between two otherwise unrelated texts in the form of comparison and contrast.
You must choose one poem from the poetry required reading packet this semester AND you must choose one modern song with lyrics. These two texts must have a thematic connection that you will elaborate on in your paper in the form of comparative analysis. The texts might, and almost certainly will, differ in how they treat their shared theme, but find ways in which the poets and songwriters words tend to send a similar thematic message through similar or different artistic techniques.
1. This paper must be a minimum of 1200 words, not including the header or Works Cited.
2. This paper must use at least 3 secondary sources of some sort, such as:
a. Interviews
b. Author Biography on Gale
c. Critical Essays on Gale
d. Ideologically Related Sources
3. MLA Format
4. Works Cited, which includes both primary sources and secondary sources
5. Must use ample embedded quotations with correct formatting for poetry and prose, with correctly formatted in-text citations.
Final Recommendation: Have a compare and contrast organizational strategy, which we will discuss in class. But here are the possible strategies where A and B are the poems and the numbers are the topics you will use to analyze them within those paragraphs (each element is a body paragraph):
First Strategy: AB1, AB2, AB3, AB4, AB5, AB6
Second Strategy: A1, B1, A2, B2, A3, B3
Third Strategy: A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3
Note: This does not tell you when to compare and when to contrast: in theory each topic could be either a similarity or a difference, but a single topic could allow you to find both similarities AND differences at the same time. Just make sure you are looking at shared aspects of each poem, and then talking about how they are handled similarly, differently, or both.
