Each week in this course, you will develop your understanding of the research process in education by working on a section of your research paper. Your research paper should be between 15-20 pages, not including the title page, reference page, and appendix (if applicable). Please be sure to follow APA 6th edition standards and view the attachment, sample paper, and APA resources in the important information forum for formatting support.

SECTIONS:
Title Page- Follow APA Style Manual
Introduction- (approx. 1-2 pages)
This section should give a general outline of what your paper is about. Why is this an important
topic? What is the paper going to tell the reader? What does each section include (generally)? In
this section you will develop your problem in the most logical fashion and cite relevant research
supporting the need for your research. When you state your problem, be sure to include the
variables to be studied as well as your hypothesis.
Literature Review- (approx. 6-8 pages)
You need to have 6-8 scholarly resources that you refer to in this paper. When citing research,
briefly state purpose, method, results, and conclusion. How is this information significant to your
topic? What information does it contribute? This is your opportunity to present the results of
similar and/or relevant research and tie them into your idea. Your literature review section
should include:
Define your topic: What is the issue/concept/area you are exploring?
What is out there in terms of research on your topic? (Scholarly resources published
within the last 10 years)
Are there conflicting results in the research on your topic?
Are there pros/cons or strengths/weaknesses associated with your topic?
Based on your research, what are your conclusions about this topic?
Method- (approx. 3-4 pages)
The purpose of the method section is to tell the reader exactly how your research would be
conducted. The Method section contains several subheadings.
Participants- This is where you will specify your sample and population. Be sure
to include how the sample was drawn and any restrictions on the selection of the sample.
The total number of participants including the number in each condition should be clearly
stated.
Apparatus/Materials- All relevant aspects of the apparatus and materials need to
be included in this section. It will be important to describe the apparatus in detail.
Materials such as survey instruments and tests also need to be described in this section.
Design- This is where you say what type of design you used (ie. qualitative
research- factorial, correlation, matched groups, etc.). Be sure to specify your variables
Procedure- You will go step-by-step through the study in a way that makes it
understandable and replicable to the reader (much like a recipe in a cookbook). The trick
is that if you cannot replicate the study from reading the Method section, especially the
Procedure, then you have not written it in sufficient detail. Describe here exactly how the
participants will be seated, manipulated, tested, monitoredeverything that happens up
through debriefing them and thanking them for participation. Include how the
independent variable will be administered and how the dependent variable will be
recorded. Any techniques used as control in the experiment should also be mentioned
here.
Data Analysis and Interpretation- How will you analyze the data you have
collected? How will you compare and contrast data sets to identify common themes and
patterns?
Findings and Application- (approx. 2-3 pages) Complete by end of week 6
Describe how you plan to implement what you have learned from your research as an
educator/school counselor working in the field of education. How do you plan to use this
information? How will you share the findings you reported in the previous section?
Conclusion- (approx. 1-2 pages)
This section is a brief synthesis to conclude that the paper did what it intended to do. Should
corroborate the intent that you established in your introductory paragraph.

Research Problem
Many educators are leaving the teaching profession. There is a high need for great teachers across all school systems but it has been hard to keep teachers in the classroom. In Georgia 44% of teachers are leaving the career field within five years of teaching (Owens, 2015, pg 3). Teacher retention is a greater issue then just not having enough teachers; it is affecting the students across all curriculum areas due to things like large class sizes and eventually high school dropouts. Teacher retention is the biggest effect on high poverty areas due to the difficulty of working in those schools (Simon, 2015). The research would be based on finding out why while teacher recruitment his going up and teacher retention as well as gone up.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to explore the reasons why teachers are leaving the career so early in their career. This research will also discuss the effects it is having on students in the classroom. The focus of this research will be teachers who have left the field within five years of teaching.
RATIONALE

The fact that teaching is a career field that many people go into for the joy of making a difference in the lives of the next generation but in a few short years that drive and passion dwindling away is a major concern. Understanding why teachers are leaving is important because its going to affect society in the long run. Staffing a general education classroom with a well-rounded, certified teacher is already hard enough. Imagine the other classrooms high-need classrooms. The only way to solve this problem is to get some insight into why teachers are leaving and how to get teachers to stay. The purpose of education is to allow students to gain a meaningful education so they can grow up to change the world. This notion will not stand if there isnt anyone in place to teach, inspire, and grow them.
WHAT NEXT
This research collected would be used to create professional communities of mentors and instruction support staff that focus specifically on the findings. Many times in education, issues are not addressed directly. There are short-cuts being taken to solve a problem and that is not working. For this specific issue, the findings need to be addressed openly and honestly. Research shows that induction programs are effective in reducing new teachers’ attrition rates and can make a significant difference in the kind of teachers produced and the learning experiences their students have (Curran, 2002, pg. 2). Many school district have gone away from these programs so this is a perfect opportunity to re-implement them and had them the task of teacher retention.

The question of Why do you teach? is asked many times among educators. Though the responses may sound different, ultimately the theme is the same. In the tough times, teachers have to focus on those students and those moments that makes you feel like you are making a difference. Support networks and creative outlets are vital to the balance of a teachers personal and professional life. The issue with the teaching profession recently is that teachers are leaving within the first few years. The reasons are not limited to lack of administrative support, problems with student discipline, and low student motivation. The implementation of support networks or programs for teacher need to be considered or re-vamped (Stolpa, 2006).
The term revolving door can be used when considering the teacher retention issues faced by districts across the states. Research shows that 40-50% of teachers are leaving the profession within the first 5 years. In studies conducted across surveyed district, the findings show that the percentages vary greatly among districts. The districts with the highest rates were larger urban districts. Part of teacher retention issue is the cost. Districts are spending up to 4 million dollars in hiring the novice teachers. Other factors to be considered in the revolving door is teachers taking leave of absence, crossing districts and movig within the state (Papay, 2017).
