The video that I chose to examine was Benjamin Isaac, EdD student, inspiring children with special needs (Isaac, 2014). In this resource, Isaac (2014), explains why and how he is utilizing the program of Walden University. He explained that he will use all of the skills from his special education program to gain further insights and strategies in his animation endeavor; this venture is aimed to achieve a higher level of learning and achievement for students with special needs by increasing their self-confidence. Two codes that I developed from the transcript were Wrongly Defined and Isaacs Friends.

Scholar of Change Benjamin Isaac Program Transcript BENJAMIN ISAAC: My name is Benjamin Isaac and I’m currently a Walden University student pursuing a doctorate degree in the field of special education. Research shows that students with special learning needs who feel good about themselves perform better academically than those with low self-concept. A Google search for the definition of the word special reveals an adjective that means better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual. But far too often, students deemed special are made to feel like they are inadequate, subpar, and unintelligent. That’s why I am attempting to effect social change with the help of a few very special friends of mine. I’d like to introduce you to Skeeter Buzz, and Gigi. SKEETER: Hi. BUZZ: Hi. GIGI: Hello. BENJAMIN ISAAC: These three characters were initially created for an educational children’s cartoon that features live child actors mixed with 3D animation. As the characters began to develop, however, I had an epiphany. I wondered what would happen if I gave all three characters special needs. And what if these special needs were depicted as merely mental and physical conditions and not definitive characteristics of who these characters were. As a result, Skeeter was developed as a character with autism. Buzz, the rapping fly, was further developed as a character with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. And Gigi was modeled after my own daughter, who has cerebral palsy. To add authenticity to each character, I decided to have each character voiced by a child that had that same condition. As a result, Skeeter, the DJ, was voiced by Ian and Connor, two children with autism. Buzz was voiced by my son Truth, and Gigi was voiced by my daughter, Kennedy. The purpose of the show was not to elicit sympathy from the masses, but to show children with special needs in a very normal light. As a result, the special needs will more than likely only be mentioned in the opening credits. After that the children will merely be who they are. The education I am receiving from Walden University will serve to provide research-based teaching strategies and information about students with special learning needs that will be incorporated into the show’s production and shared with the viewers. Through this show, I intend to leverage the power of teaching in technology and effect positive social change through education. It is my hope that the characters will serve to inspire, influence, and impact all children with special needs. But beyond that it is my goal to show the world that students with 2016 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 Scholar of Change Benjamin Isaac special needs are just that, special, blessed with differences that force them to interact with the world differently because they view it from a different perspective. Walden University has helped me develop this show into an entertaining piece of media with the potential to educate the world about the true nature of children with special needs. The first code I chose was Wrongly Defined. In this code, Isaac (2014) briefly went over some terms that are used to incorrectly identify students with special needs; inadequate, subpar, and unintelligent. The intent was to frame how the next segment will be used to increase self-confidence for special education students. The second code, Isaacs Friends, describes how his characters (Skeeter, Buzz, and Gigi) provide visual representations of personalities that have special needs, but, are not defined by those particular circumstances.

In the video Battling Drug Addiction in The Heartland, Jackie Kundert gives a 1:58 minutes long overview of his inspiration towards making a remarkable change in the society in Green County, Wisconsin. Kundert speaks of her son who adopted heroine drug abuse, a problem that was widespread throughout the state. Inspired by the desire to achieve control over the matter, especially the large number of individuals who were addicted, she rolled out a new program dubbed F.A.I.T.H with the intent of making a positive effect on reducing the addiction rates in the county (Kundert, 2012).
According to Saldana (2015), a code is a qualitative inquiry which is often used for summative purposes and which imparts a general attribute towards a given content (Saldana, 2013, p. 3). Kundert, in her video, does make use of certain codes which have characteristically contextualized the larger problem often faced within this population. For instance, the term addiction is a major issue when it comes to youths and the issue of drug abuse. Addiction has more to do with being heavily reliant on drugs to a point that one cannot live without them. Ideally, Kundert does recognize the extent to which the issue of addiction to heroine in the population of study has affected them. Addiction is such a huge issue that it is the primary focus that the F.A.I.T.H. network primarily targets eliminating it among the youths. She recognizes the importance of the addiction concept by outlining that I started an organization called F.A.I.T.H., which stands for fighting addiction it takes account (Kundert, 2012).
Another of the codes used in Kunderts review is rate. Fighting drug abuse within any population is not possible without focusing on understanding the prevalence of the problem within a target population. Across a large population, a problem can be sufficiently characterized by the rates. It was, for instance the high prevalence rates as depicted in the Wisconsin State Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse map that inspired Kundert to have an idea of where to begin in her anti-heroine addiction efforts (Kundert, 2012). Prevalence rates give an overview of the extent of the heath issue across a given population (Osborn, 2006, p. 18). Jackie and her organizations inspiration towards remediating the problem of drug abuse in the Green County and the larger Wisconsin state is driven by the spiking rates of drug abuse in the population. Every researcher and program developer primarily focuses on the rates of prevalence of issues in the society to make rational decisions in regard to what to focus on across a population.
